Daily Report for Thursday September 28th 2017

Weather for Today: Mainly Sunny and Cool..

Period A: Today was a short day schedule on account of the school participating in the annual Terry Fox Run for the Cure.  We began our day with our Mindfulness Minutes. We then went to the M.E. Kitchen to prep the food for tomorrow’s lunch which we will be bringing to the Markham Fair. We all worked hard to prepare the lunch of Curry Chicken Wraps with Chickpea Salad. The Curry Chicken filling for the wraps was delicious and we all got to taste it.

 Period B: We continued with food prep.

Period C: After finishing making the lunch we went back to Room 200 where we looked up some information on the Markham Fair using the IWB.

After lunch we went to the Computer Lab.

Period D : We all participated in the Terry Fox Run for the Cure. It was a lot of fun. When we had finished the run we all got a banana and a bag of chips.

Daily Report for Wednesday September 27th 2017

         

Weather for Today : Sunny and  HOT !!!

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We used the                  IWB  ( Interactive Whiteboard) to search the Web for ideas for our picnic lunch which we will be bringing to the Markham Fair. We decided on Curry Chicken Wraps with Chickpea Salad. We made a shopping list. We went to No Frills to buy the groceries for our lunch.

Period B: We came back from No Frills at 10:40 and went to the ME Kitchen. We all helped to put the groceries away. We printed out the recipes we will be using to make our lunch. Before we printed them we had to double the ingredients.  

After lunch we went to the computer lab,

Period C: We used the IWB to go to the Markham Fair Website. We learned about some of the things that we will see there. We also downloaded a Scavenger Hunt we hope be able to use at the Fair.

Period D: Mr. Stolte is away today and we will be having Ms. Zarudnyas our Occasional Teacher. We will be working on our Colour Wheel project.

Note to Parents: Students should bring a lunch tomorrow.

Daily Report for Tuesday September 26th 2017

Weather for Today : Mainly Sunny and HOT !!!

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. Amena, Rebeca and Nerissa went to their Co-op placement at Giant Tiger at Kennedy and Eglinton. They were working in the back of the store hanging shirts on hangers. They hung Ladies and Men’s shirts. The rest of us did a literacy activity. We listened to the book Stellaluna being read aloud. We then made a word web about bats.

Period B: We went to thee ME kitchen to get the dishes and cutlery to set up in S-7 for the Mindfulness Community lunch. We went to S-7 and set the table. The girls got back from Co-op. We went back to Room 200 and learned some more about bats. We learned that bats’ getting into people’s hair is a myth.

After lunch we went to the Computer Lab.

Period C:.We went back to the ME Kitchen to wash the dishes from the  Mindfulness Community lunch. We filled in the Daily Report.

We had a Mindfulness Meditation sitting.

Period D: We worked on decorations for the Terry Fox Run. We also began work on a new project about the Colour Wheel.

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We did our Weekend Journals. We wrote in our journals some of the things we had done over the weekend. When we had done writing we presented our work to the class.

Period B: We did a math activity on the Promethean Board. We went for a Community Walk.

Period C: We filled in the Daily Report.

Period D: We  presented the artwork we had made to Ms. Pallas, our Vice Principal.  We then went back to S-16 where worked on decorations for Thursday’s Terry Fox Run.

Daily Report for Friday September 22nd 2017

Weather for Today : Mainly Sunny with a few Clouds….

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We went to the Computer Lab where we worked on individual educational programs. Mr. Wilkens also changed some of our passwords.

Period B: We began with a Body Scan Mindfulness exercise. At 10:40 we went to an assembly where we learned about Terry Fox and the fundraising drive we will be having here at Maplewood.

Period C: We went for a Community Walk.  We filled in the Daily Report.

We also did some literacy activities on the IWB.

Period D: We went to the Annual Welcome Back Corn Roast where we got to enjoy some freshly picked Corn on the Cob.

Weather for Today : Sunny with a few clouds…

Period A and Period B:  We had our Mindfulness Minutes. We then went to the ME Kitchen to prepare our lunch. Amena and Brandon peeled the potatoes and then cut them into French Fries using a fry cutter. Nerissa and Rebeca made the burgers. They mixed some ground beef with seasonings and then portioned out and formed the patties. Mark and Ahmed set the table. Ahmed also helped to cook the burger patties. Matthew and Shakur peeled and grated the carrots for the Cole Slaw. Fahim cut the Kaiser rolls.   

Period C: We met in the ME Kitchen . We cleaned the kitchen and did the dishes. Then we had our dessert of Chocolate Chip Cookies. We filled in the Daily Report. We had a Mindfulness Meditation Sit.

Period D: We continued working on our special project for Ms. Pallas’s office. We have almost finished it. Here are some pictures of us working on it…..

Weather for Today: Mostly sunny and Hot…

Period A: We had our Mindfulness Minutes. We created a menu for tomorrow’s lunch. We will be having Hamburgers with French Fries and Coleslaw. We then made a shopping list based on our menu. We walked to No Frills where we bought the groceries for tomorrow’s lunch. When we got back to school we went to the ME Kitchen and put away the groceries.

Period B: We made a batch of Cinnamon Buns. Amena and Rebeca went to a MADD presentation about impaired driving. When we had finished making the buns and icing   we went back to class and had some free time.

Period C: We filled in the Daily Report. We did a Body Scan Mindfulness exercise.

Period D: We worked on a group project , a large leaf rubbing/painting which we will be giving to Ms. Pallas for her office.

Note to Parents : Tomorrow is Lunch Program lunch. Students will not need to bring a lunch.

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We then did a Money Math Activity using the Promethean Board. We had to add up different amounts of coins and solve some problems.

Period B: We went to the ME Kitchen to get the dishware and cutlery to set up the table in S-7 for the Maplewood Mindfulness Community Lunch. We then went to S-7 where we all had a chance to set up the table. We then went on a Community Walk.

After lunch we went to the computer lab.

Period C:  We filled in the Daily Report. We had a Mindfulness Meditation Sit.

Period D: We will be trying to finish off our Leaf Artwork for the Markham Fair Art Show.

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We then did our weekly Weekend Journal activity. We wrote in our journals about some of the things we did over the weekend. When we had finished writing our journals we presented our work to the class.

Period B: Mr. Wilkens talked to us about the Four Food Groups from Canada’s Food Guide. We learned about the four food groups and how many servings we should try to have from each group. We then did a sorting activity on the Promethean Board where we had to sort different types of food into the four groups.

After lunch we went to the Computer Lab.

Period C: We went for a Community Walk. We filled in the Daily Report. We had a Mindfulness Meditation Sit.

Period D: We continued to work on the Leaves Rubbing/Painting for the Markham Fair Art Show.

Daily Report for Friday September 15th 2017

Weather for Today: Sunny and Hot……

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We went to the ME Kitchen to prepare our lunch. Rebeca and Fahim coated the chicken pieces with the Shake and Bake coating. Mark and Shakur peeled the potatoes. Matthew and Amena Cut up the salad garnish of cucumber, celery, sweet peppers and tomato. Nerushan and Ahmed set the table. Nerushan also made the Fruit Punch.

Period B: We continued with our lunch prep for a bit then returned to our classroom. We did not have the time for our regular Friday yoga session, but we were able to do a short Body Scan Mindfulness exercise. We then returned to the ME Kitchen to finish off our lunch prep 

Period C:  We met in the ME Kitchen to have our dessert of Strawberry Rhubarb Pie with ice cream. After dessert we had to clean the kitchen and do the dishes. Amena and Rebeca started with the dishes and Mark and Brandon finished them off. Here is a pictures of  us cleaning up…

Period D: We continued to work on our Markham Fair Art Show project.

Weather for Today: Mainly Sunny and Hot…

Period A: Mr. Wilkens was away for the morning  and we had Mr. Osbourne as our occasional teacher. We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We then did our Current Event activity. We cut pictures out of the 24 Hour newspaper which we used to fill some worksheets. When we had finished our worksheet we presented our work to the class.

Period B: We went for a short Community Walk. When we got back from our walk we went to the computer lab where we worked on individual educational programs.

After lunch we went to the Computer Lab.

Period C: Mr. Wilkens was back and we went to the ME Kitchen to make a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie for tomorrow’s lunch. Ahmed and Matthew cut up the rhubarb and strawberries. The rest of us took turns rolling out the pie dough. There was a fire drill that took up a lot of time so we only had time for s short sit. That is why this daily report is late !

Period D:  We finished off our Portfolio’s. We began a new project. We are going to be doing a rubbing with crayons of some leaves we collected outside on Tuesday. We will then paint over the leaf rubbing for  a dramatic effect. We will be entering these art projects in the Markham Fair Art Contest.

Daily Report for Wednesday September 13th 2017

Weather for Today: Mainly Sunny and Warm…

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We made a menu for the lunch we will be making on Friday. We then made a shopping list  based on the menu. We will be having Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes and Corn on the Cob with a Garden Salad. We then went to No Frills to buy the groceries we will need for our lunch.

Period B: We got back from No Frills and went to the ME Kitchen to put the groceries away. We then made some pie pastry for the pie we will be having for dessert on Friday. We then watched Mr. Wilkens demonstrate how to portion out and wash the chicken legs. We cleaned up the kitchen.

After lunch we went to the Computer Lab

Period C: We began with a Money Math activity on the Promethean Board. We took turns coming up with different sums using coins and bills. We filled in the Daily Report. We had a Mindfulness Meditation Sit.

Period D: We will be finishing off our Art Portfolio’s. We will be starting a new project, a painting of autumn leaves. We hope to be able to enter the project in the Art Show at the Markham Fair.

Note to Parents : We will be having our Lunch Program lunch on Friday this week. Students will need to bring a lunch tomorrow. 

Daily Report for Tuesday September 12th 2017

Weather for Today: Mainly Sunny and Warm….

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We used the Promethean Board to listen to a story. The story was called Harry the Dirty Dog . It was about a dog that got so dirty his family didn’t recognize him ! He had a bath though and his family realized who he was. After we had listened to the story and answered some questions about it, we made a story map about the story.

Period B: We went to the ME Kitchen to get the dishes for the Maplewood Mindfulness Community  lunch. We then went to S-7 and set the table. Because we will be washing the dishes after lunch we did our Community Walk in Period B.

After lunch we went to the Computer Lab.

Period C: We went back to the ME Kitchen. Ahmed and Fahim went with Mr. Wilkens to S-7 to get the dishes while the rest of us set up the sinks for washing. We all had a chance to practice our dish washing skills. We went back to Room 200 and  filled in the Daily Report. We had a Mindfulness Meditation Sit.

Period D: We hope to finish off our Art Portfolio’s today.

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. Mr. Wilkens gave us a lesson on using point form notes to help us write our Weekend Journals. We all wrote in our Weekend Journals about what we had done over the weekend. When we had finished our journals we presented our work to the class.

Period B: We did a Money Math activity. We were given an assortment of coins and bills. (Plastic Money) Using the Promethean Board Mr. Wilkens went over the different coins. We then used the Promethean Board to come up with different amounts using different values of coins.

After lunch the class went to the Computer Lab.

Period C: We went for a Community walk. We filled in the Daily Report. We had a Mindfulness Meditation Sit.

Period D: We will be continuing to work on our Art Portfolio's. 

Daily Report for Friday September 8th 2017

Period A: We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We then had our weekly visit to the Computer Lab. We all worked on various educational programs.

Period B: We had our first session of Hatha Yoga. We went  to a Web Site (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CITc2AxYnPY)  that showed us how to do different Asanas. When we had finished with our Yoga exercises we did a Body Scan Mindfulness exercise.

Period C: We went for a Community Walk. Since it was such a nice day we walked all the way to the Guild. When we got back from our walk we filled in the Daily Report.

Period D: In Art today we will be continuing to work on our Portfolio’s.

Daily Report for Thursday September 7th 2017

         

Weather for Today: Partly Cloudy and Warm…

Period A and B : We began with our Mindfulness Minutes. We went to the ME Kitchen. Some of the students from last year helped to show the new students where things are kept in the kitchen. We washed our hands and put on our aprons. Here is a picture of us all ready to cook...

 We then watched Mr. Wilkens do a demonstration of how to make an Apple Pie. Some of us had a chance to practice our measuring skills. Here is a picture of Fahim measuring out the flour for the pastry.

After the pastry was made Mr. Wilkens put it in the fridge to chill. We then began to make the apple filling. We all got a chance to use a special tool that peels, cores and slices the apples. It was a lot harder to do than it would first appear. Here is a video of Brandon doing an amazing job with the tool..

We watched Mr. Wilkens roll out the pastry  and learned how to do it, though because of time constraints we did not get a chance to do it ourselves. Next time we make pies we all will get a chance to practice this skill, which is probably the hardest aspect of making a pie. After we put the pies  in the oven we went back to our classroom where we did some review of what we had learned.

Period C: We met in the ME Kitchen to sample our Apple Pie. Here is a picture of the final product.

We all got to enjoy the pie with some Ice Cream…..

Period D: We filled in the Daily Report. We had a Mindfulness Meditation Sit.

Daily Report for Wednesday September 6th 2017

         

Weather for Today: Partly cloudy with a chance of rain in the afternoon.

Period A: We started the day off by watching a video on the Promethean Board about Mindfulness Meditation. We then had our first Mindfulness Minutes. We used a guided meditation. The class did quite well at the exercise. We then began work on our Daily Report. As we did not have time to do our report from yesterday we began by writing out yesterday’s report.

Period B: We continued work on Mondays report. When we had finished the report we went for a Community Walk. When we got back from the walk we had some free time.

Period C: We had a class discussion and came up with a list of different possible field trips that we might go on this year. We filled in our Daily Report. We had a Mindfulness Meditation sitting. We got ready to go to our Art class since we will be going to the buses at the end of the period.

Period D: We will be working on our Portfolio’s. We have all done our homework and decided on our favourite color. We will be using colored Bristol Board and pictures from magazines to make our portfolio.

Daily Report for Tuesday September 5th 2017

Weather  for Today: Rainy and Warm….

Today was the first day of the new school year ! When we got to class Mr. Wilkens and Mr. Makan assigned  us  our lockers. We then had a class discussion where we came up with some class guidelines (rules !) After we had finished writing out the class rules Mr. Wilkens told us about the different activities and learning we will be doing over the next year.

Today  was a short day so we had no lunch period. At 11:10 we all went to Room S-16, the Art Room where we met our Art Teacher.  Mr. Stolte went over the rules for the art room and told us about our first project which will be a personalized Portfolio. He even gave us some homework, asking us to think of a favourite color  to use for our Portfolio. 

   

We got out of school at 12:00 noon, however many of our buses were late and some of us did not get picked up till 1:00 !
