Daily Report for Friday February 27th 2015

The Weather Today was: Mainly Sunny and very Cold….

Today was our field trip Ripley’s Aquarium. It was a great trip. We all had very good time. Ibby’s favourite part of the trip was watching the sharks swimming. Aaron especially likes seeing the swordfish and the shark right behind him. Jaran liked seeing the sting rays and sharks swimming over him in the underwater tunnel. Robert liked seeing the turtles. Stafhan doesn't know what his favourite thing was. Laven  liked the seashells. Kabilan liked the orange fish. Ralph liked the swordfish lying on the glass and he took a lot of pictures on his phone.  Ms. Benyarko liked watching the sharks swim above us while we were on the moving sidewalk as well as the jellyfish tanks. Mr. Wilkens favourite thing about the trip was that it went well with no problems ! Here are some pictures of the aquarium…..

Note to Parents: We will be going swimming at the YMCA on Monday. Please have students bring swim wear and towel as well as gym cloth

Daily Report for Thursday February 26th 2015

The Weather Today was: Overcast and Cold…..

In Class Today:

Period 1: In period 1 today we worked on preparing our lunch. We had Grilled Cheese Sandwich’s, Garden Salad and Tomato Soup. Aaron opened and emptied the Tomato soup. Laven , Robert, Stafhan and Kabilan cut up the vegetable garnish for the salad. Ralph washed and spun the lettuce for the salad. Ibby and Shagee set the table. Period 2: When we had finished our lunch prep we all worked on our current event activity. At 10:30 we were called down to the library for the final Mental Health workshop of the month. Today’s workshop was on resilience or how we can bounce back from stress and adversity. We watched a video and then did some different activities like making Thank You cards and making healthy snacks. Here are some pictures of us at the workshop….

Then we went back to class to eat our lunch. Here is a picture of us eating our delicious lunch…

Period 3: We had a busy day again in the food school. Most of us were peeling and prepping garlic, onions and carrots. Ibby and Ralph helped to clean up and put away the cutlery.

Period 4: We did our classroom jobs. We filled in the daily report. We had our daily meditation sitting.

Note to Parents: Field Trip to Ripley’s Aquarium tomorrow. Students should bring a bagged lunch that does not require heating.

Daily Report for Wednesday February 25th 2015

The Weather Today was: Sunny with a few clouds and COLD

In Class Today:

Period 1: Mr. Wilkens was at a PD session this morning so we had different on call teachers in the morning. We started out the day by having a classroom discussion on what we had done yesterday evening. Then we did a word search on Black History. During the announcements Aaron did another Black History month reading, this time about Laurence Hill the author of Book of Negroes.

Period 2: We began the period by singing Happy Birthday to our on call teacher Mr. Sullivan. Then we did a mental health activity about friends. We watched a video about what makes a good friend and had a discussion about the topic while we watched. We finished off the activity by completing a worksheet on friendship.

Period 3: In food school today we had another busy period. Laven, Stafhan, Robert, Shagee and Jaran chopped up some green peppers. Ibby helped to clean and put away cutlery. Aaron washed tables and wrote out the menu for tomorrow. Meanwhile Kabilan went to his co-op placement at the Boys and Girls Club.

Period 4: We did our classroom jobs. We filled in the daily report. We had our daily meditation sitting.

Daily Report for Tuesday February 24th 2015

The Weather Today was: Overcast and Very Cold (again)…

In Class Today:

Period 1: We started out by writing in our weekend journals. We then came up with our weekly spelling words. This week’s words are about Black History Month. To end off the period we used the whiteboard to practice our addition skills.

Period 2: While Aaron was at co-op and Ralph went to the boys chat group the rest of the class did our weekly Drama activity. We started out with three games of musical chairs. We had some different winners for a change with Shagee and Ibby both winning. After that we had a game of animal charades. At the end of the period we used the whiteboard to practice our spelling words.

Period 3: In Food school today we had a busy and productive period. Aaron helped to write out tomorrow`s menu. Ralph dealt with the recycling and bagged some food. Jaran, Laven and Robert peeled and cut up some squash. Stafhan grated some cheese. Kabilan cut up some pineapple. Ibby put away trays in the server.

Period 4: We all did our classroom jobs. We then filled in the daily report. We had our daily meditation sitting.

Daily Report for Friday February 20th 2015

The Weather Today was: Sunny and VERY COLD !!!...

In Class Today:

Period 1: We went to the Computer Lab for our regular weekly computer session. We visited various educational sites. We also began work on a Word Cloud project that we are doing as part of Mental Health Month. During the school announcements Aaron continued his Black History readings with a reading about Nelson Mandela.

Period 2:  We began the period by doing some final studying for our weekly spelling test. It turns out we really needed the studying since the words this week were quite difficult. We then had the actual spelling test. This week’s words were about Mental Health and they were some hard ! The grades were not as good as usual. Next week we will have to choose a less challenging topic ! After the test we went on the whiteboard where we played a few mathematical games. The class did very well on this exercise.

Period 3: Since there was not a lot to do in the kitchen, this being Friday, the class went to the computer lab where we visited some sites having to with food.

Period 4: We all got to eat some delicious Cinnamon buns that Mr. Wilkens baked for us. We then did our classroom jobs. We filled the daily report. We then had a short sit….

In Class Today:

Period 1: We worked on preparing our lunch in first period. Ralph and Aaron made the meatballs…

Period 2: We finished up the lunch prep and then we did our Current Event activity. At 10:30 we were called down to the library for a Mental Health Workshop. We learned about stress and healthy ways to deal with it. We all got to make our own Stress Ball by filling balloon’s with rice. When the workshop was over we went back to class to eat our fabulous meal of Spaghetti and Meatballs !...

Period 3: In food school we had another busy and productive day. Aaron, Jaran and Stafhan chopped up some carrots. Laven, Ralph and Kabilan peeled some onions. Ibby washed some dishes.

Period 4: We started out the period by having our dessert. We had Mr. Wilkens famous brownie’s. They were very tasty ! We then did our classroom jobs. We filled in the daily report. Then we had our daily meditation sitting.

Period 2: In period 2 the class walked to No Frills to buy groceries for tomorrow’s lunch. We will be having Spaghetti and Meatballs, Garlic Bread and Caesar Salad. Here are some pictures of us doing our grocery shopping…

   

Period 3: We were quite busy in Food School today. We helped to prepare for tomorrow’s lunch by grating mozzarella cheese. We also did some cleaning of the kitchen. Here are some pictures of us working in the Food School…

Daily Report for Tuesday February 17th 2015

The Weather Today was: Overcast and COLD…

In Class Today:

Period 1: Today we did a special Mental Health activity in first period. We all filled in a pamphlet on self-esteem. We wrote down what we like about ourselves, what we are good at and what makes us a good friend. When we had finished we each presented our work to the class.

Period 2: We filled in or Weekend Journals. We then came up  with this week’s spelling words. This week’s theme is in line with our school`s  Mental Health Month. At the end of the period we watched a video about doing good deeds and helping others which is good for our mental health.

Period 3: Because Ms. Seccareccia was away today we could not work in the kitchen. Instead we went to the Video Viewing room and watched a movie.

Period 4: We did our classroom jobs. We filled in the daily report. Then we had our daily meditation sitting.

Daily Report for Thursday February 12th 2015

The Weather Today was: Sunny and Very Cold !

In Class Today:

Period 1: We started out our day by preparing our Breakfast for Lunch, or Brunch. Ralph and Kabilan peeled the potatoes for the home fries. Stafhan and Laven cut up the onions for the home fries. Ibby and Jaran set the table. Later on Kabilan and Laven cracked the eggs for the scrambled eggs and French toast and Laven mixed up the pancake mix. Aaron placed the sausage and bacon on baking trays and then made the French toast.

Period 2: While Mr. Wilkens and Ms. Williams went to the community kitchen to cook the eggs, meat and home fries the rest of the class helped to clean up. We then studied for our spelling test. The food was ready a little early so we ate at 10:45, except for Ibby who had to wait for Nurse Becky to arrive. After we ate we did our spelling test on Valentine’s Day words.

Period 3: Since the school kitchen will be closed for the next four days because of tomorrow’s PA Day and Monday’s Family Day there was not a lot to do in the kitchen. Ms. Seccareccia  had us create some special Valentines cards in class today.

Period 4: We had a Valentine’s Day Dance in last period today. It was a lot of fun for all !

Note to Parents: No school tomorrow for PA Day. No school on Monday. Have a great Family Day Long Weekend !

In Class Today:

Period 1: We walked to No Frills in the morning to buy groceries for tomorrow’s lunch. We are going to be having “ Breakfast for Lunch” or Brunch. On the menu is pancakes, French Toast, Home Fried Potatoes, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon.

Period 2: As today was a special day schedule to accommodate an options selection Open House we did not have much time for this period. We read the Metro newspaper.

Period 3: In Food school today we did a number of different tasks. Some of us did food prep while others helped to clean the shop.

Period 4: We did our classroom jobs. We filled in the daily report. We had our daily meditation sitting.

Daily Report for Tuesday February 10th 2015

The Weather Today was: Sunny with a few Clouds

In Class Today:

Period 1: We started out the day by going to the Art Room. Since we no longer have art during the regular day we will be starting ceramics with Mr. Wilkens again. Today we began work on a new project. We are making some St. Patrick’s Day Candleholders,

Period 2: We began by going outside to deliver the Bluffs Monitor newspaper in our local neighbourhood. When we got back to the classroom we did our weekly drama activity, or at least half of it. We played three games of Musical chairs and Stafhan won all three games !

Period 3: In Food school today we were quite busy. We did some food prep for tomorrow’s pizza lunch.  Stafhan, Shagee and Kabilan grated some Mozzarella cheese. Aaron, Ralph and Laven cut up vegetables for the pizza. Ibby washed the tables.

Period 4: We did our classroom jobs. We filled in the daily report. We had our daily meditation sitting.

Daily Report for Monday February 9th 2015

The Weather Today was: Overcast and Cold….

Today we did our weekly trip to the YMCA. This week another class went to the Y as well. Ms. McDonald`s ISP class came with us to the Y. We took the TTC to the YMCA. When we got there we changed into our gym clothes and then went upstairs to the indoor track. After walking around the track we went downstairs where we worked out on the treadmill machines. When we had finished our activities at the Y we went to the food court at Scarborough Town Centre where we ate lunch. We then walked around the mall for a while before taking the TTC back to school.

Period 1: We worked on preparing our lunch for today. Ralph, Shagee, Kabilan and Stafhan peeled the potatoes. Jaran and Laven cut up the garnish for the Garden Salad.  Aaron coated the chicken pieces for the oven baked “Fried Chicken Robert and Ibrahim set the table. Period 2: Once we had finished up with our lunch prep we went on the Whiteboard to check out some new educational sites that Mr. Wilkens learned about  yesterday at the ISP Teachers Book Club. Meanwhile, Aaron went to the office to read out an article on Martin Luther King during the daily announcements. Aaron did a fantastic job ! We also saw a short You Tube video on the Black Canadian experience.

Period 3: Since there was not a lot to do in the Food School, because it was Friday, Ms. Benyarko took most of the class to the video room to watch an educational video. Ralph remained in class to do some cleaning. Good on you Ralph !

Period 4: When we got back to class we had our dessert of Fruit Salad, We then did our classroom jobs. Then we filled in the daily report. We then had a short sitting.

Daily Report for Wednesday February 4th 2015

The Weather Today was: Overcast with Light Flurries

In Class Today:

Today we went to the Y.M.C.A. We were supposed to have gone on Monday, but because of the snow storm and subsequent bus cancellation we were not able to go. Hence our excursion today. We took the TTC to the Y and when we got there we went upstairs to the indoor track and walked 14 laps, or 1 mile. We then went to the pool where we did some swimming. After our time at the Y we went to the Food Court at Scarborough Town Centre to eat our lunch. Before we came back to school we went to Freshco to do our grocery shopping for the week. We bought some chicken as we will be having Fried Chicken, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables and Garden Salad for our Lunch Program. This week we will be having our lunch on Friday because of the Swim Meet on Thursday.

Note to Parents: Please send a lunch tomorrow as Lunch Program is on Friday this week.

Daily Report for Tuesday February 3rd 2015

The Weather Today was: Sunny with a few Clouds and Cold…

In Class Today:

Period 1: We did our weekly spelling test. This week’s spelling words were animals. The class did well, though not as well last week. Then we began our Mental Health Month activities. Today we watched some mental health videos and began work on a worksheet on stress.

Period 2: We did our weekly drama activity. First we had three games of musical chairs. Then we did a new activity where we all practiced our speaking skills by doing some tongue twisters.

Period 3: In food school today we worked on different food preparation tasks. We helped prep the pizza’s for tomorrow’s lunch. We also helped to prepare some Cottage pies for sale to staff.

Period 4: We all were assigned new classroom jobs for the month. After we had done our jobs we filled in the daily report. We then had our daily meditation sitting.

Note to Parents: We will be going to the YMCA tomorrow. Students will need swim wear and gym wear.
