Daily Report for Tuesday September 30th 2014

Today’s Date: Tuesday September 30^th 2014

The Weather Today was:  Overcast and Warm

In Class Today:

Period 1: The Bakeshop received a catering order for over a hundred Chocolate Chip Cookies so we all were kept busy portioning out the cookie dough. At the end of the period we all helped to clean up.

Period 2: Because we are going to the Markham Fair on Thursday we are making a picnic lunch to bring with us. We started out the period by creating a menu. We are going to having Tuna and Egg Salad Sandwich’s. We then made a shopping list so we could get the needed ingredients from No Frills. Then we had a shortened Drama Activity. We played two games of musical chairs and Stafhan won both games !

Period 3: We all walked to the local No Frills to buy groceries for the picnic lunch we will be bringing to the Markham Fair on Thursday.

Period 4: Since yesterday was Kabilan’s birthday, and he was away, we celebrated his birthday today with Chocolate Cake and Ice Cream. After the Birthday cake we filled in the daily report. We then had our daily meditation sit.

Today’s Date: Monday September 29, 2014

The Weather Today was: Sunny and  Very Warm

In Class Today:

Period 1: Ms. Vorobej was away today and we had Mr. McGregor as a supply teacher. We did some worksheets on how to set up the sinks and identify different equipment in the kitchen. Then we explored the kitchen to see the different types of equipment.

When we finished Baking it was time for us to go on our first trip to the YMCA. We took the TTC to the Y, which is located at the Scarborough Town Centre. We got changed into our gym clothes then walked around the walking Track upstairs. We walked almost one mile ! After we finished walking the track we went downstairs where we worked out on the treadmills.

When we had finished at the YMCA we walked over to the Food Court at Scarborough Town Centre where we ate our lunch. After lunch we explored the mall for a while before getting back on the LRT to go back to school.

After we got back to school we did our Daily Report but we did not have time for our daily sit. Too bad !

Daily Report for Friday September 26th. 2014

Today’s Date: Friday September 26^th, 2014

The Weather Today was: Sunny and Very Warm

In Class Today:

Period 1: Stafhan, Shaggy and Aaron measured out the ingredient’s for Chocolate Chip Cookies. Robert and Devon bagged the Ginger Biscotti for sale in the school. Kabilan and Laven portioned out Chocolate Walnut Cookies.   

Period 2: We began the class with a spelling test of this week’s spelling words. Then we went to the computer Lab where we worked on various educational programs.

Period 3: We all participated in our weekly Music activity. Today we continued working with the Drums. We practiced different beats and began to learn how to march while we played.

Period 4: We filled in the Daily Report. Then we had our daily sit, though we only had time for a short sit. Then we all went to the Library to watch a movie while the teachers had time to work on the IEP’s.

Note to Parents: We will be going to the YMCA. Please ensure the students have appropriate gym wear.

Daily Report for Thursday September 25th, 2014

Today’s Date: Thursday September 25^th, 2014

The Weather Today was:  Sunny and Warm

In Class Today:

Period 1: Aaron and Laven helped to make tart shells. The rest of the class all portioned out Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. At the end of class we all helped to clean up.

Period 2: At the beginning of class we did some money math worksheets where we identified different coins and added them up. Then we prepped for our Lunch Program lunch. Today we had Hamburgers, French Fries and Coleslaw. Jaran and Kabilan set the table. Robert made the Fruit Punch. Laven and Mr. Wilkens went to the ME Kitchen to cook the hamburger s and fries.

Period 3: Because we were on a special event day schedule, we ate our lunch in period 3, which was early. Then we all helped to clean up.

Period 4: We filled in the daily report and then went outside for the Opening Ceremonies for the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope Event.

Daily Report for Wednesday September 24th 2014

Today’s Date: Wednesday September 24^th 2014

The Weather Today was: Sunny and quite warm

In Class Today:

Period 1: We all went down to the Cafeteria to have our pictures taken. When we got back to class Aaron grated and chopped some dark chocolate which will be used to dip the Ginger Biscotti. Stafhan, Ibrahim and Jaran portioned out some Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. Laven and Kabilan put filling in some tart shells.

Period 2: We began the class by coming up with a Shopping List for our first trip to No Frills. Then we did our Current Events Activity. First we cut out pictures from the Metro paper then answered the 5 W questions on our worksheets. When we had all finished we presented our work to the class.

Period 3: We did our dental hygiene and then got our backpacks from our lockers for the trip to No Frills. We then walked to No Frills where we split into two groups. We bought the items on our list and then walked back to school.

Period 4: We filled in our Daily Report. Then we had our daily sitting. At the end of the period we reviewed our spelling words.

Note to Parents: Tomorrow is Lunch Program. Do not send a lunch. Please sign and return YMCA permission forms ASAP.

Daily Report for Tuesday September 23rd. 2014

Today’s Date: Tuesday September 23^rd. 2014

The Weather Today was:  Sunny and Hot

In Class Today:

Period 1: Jaran and Aaron helped to make Ginger Biscotti. Aaron grated some Orange zest. Jaran measured out the ingredients for the Biscotti. Laven and Ibrahim made dough for tarts. Shaggy and Kabilan chopped up some chocolate for the Biscotti.

Period 2: Aaron and Kabilan set the table for the Maplewood Mindfulness Community Lunch. While they were doing that the rest of the class worked on Jigzone puzzles on the Whiteboard. Then it was time for our weekly drama  activity. We played three games of musical chairs, Aaron won the first game and Stafhan won the next two ! We played the Circle dance game then finished off with a round of Animal Charades.

Period 3: We completed our dental hygiene and did our classroom  jobs. Laven and Kabilan had an extra busy time as they had to do quite a few dishes from the Mindfulness Lunch. Then we all worked on making sentences using our weekly spelling words. Near the end of the period we went for a Community Walk. It was very warm outside.

Period 4: We filled in our Daily Report. Then we had our daily meditation. At the end of class we had some time to work on our spelling words again.

Daily Report for Monday September 22nd. 2014

Today’s Date: Monday September 22^nd. 2014

The Weather Today was: A mix of Sun and clouds

In Class Today:

Period 1: Aaron portioned out some Chocolate  Chocolate Chip Cookies and some regular Chocolate Chip Cookies. Jaran portioned out some Oatmeal Raisin Cookies. Kabilan and Laven measured out the ingredients for bread. Ibrahim and Stafhan grated some lemons for lemon zest . At the end of the period we all helped to clean up.

Period 2:  We began by having a class discussion about what we did over the weekend. Then we wrote in our Weekend Journals. Mr. Wilkens then asked us to spell our weekly spelling list words. This week’s words all relate to the Terry Fox Marathon of Hope.

Period 3: We started off with dental hygiene and classroom jobs. Then we practiced our money math skills. First we used the plastic coins to make different amounts and then we did an activity on the Whiteboard. When we had finished with the Money Math we went for a Community Walk. Today we took the Go Station route.

Period 4: We filled in the Daily Report. Then we had our daily meditation sitting.

Daily Report for Friday September 19th 2014

Today’s Date: Friday September 19^th 2014

The Weather Today was: Partly Cloudy and Cool

In Class Today:

Period 1: Aaron ,Ibrahim and another student measured out the ingredients for pie pastry. Jaran , Laven and Shaggy portioned out some Chocolate Chip Cookies. Devon and Stafhan prepped some herbs to use on Focaccia Bread. Robert and Kabilan also prepped herbs, cleaning and cutting up some parsley. At the end of class we all helped to clean up.  

Period 2:  At the beginning of the period we had a Spelling Test. We had been studying our spelling words all week and the class did very well on the test. After the test we went upstairs to the Computer Lab, where we worked on different educational programs.

Period 3: When we got back from lunch we did our dental hygiene then completed our classroom jobs. Then it was time for the music portion of our weekly program. We all got a drum and a drumstick and we worked on following the beat. Near the end of the period we went for our first Community Walk. We walked through the small forest just south of the school.

Period 4: We filled in the Daily Report. Then we had our regular meditation sitting.

Daily Report for Thursday September 18th. 2014

In Class Today:

Period 1: In Baking today we all helped to make Herbed Focaccia Bread. We also helped unload and put away a delivery. At the end of class we all helped to clean up.

Period 2:  We prepared our Lunch Program Lunch of Spaghetti with Meatballs, Caesar Salad and Garlic Bread. Jaran and another student prepped the Garlic Bread. Laven made the lemonade. Stafhan and Devon set the table. Meanwhile Mr. Wilkens and Aaron went to the ME Kitchen to cook the spaghetti, heat up the sauce and meatballs and finish the garlic bread. There was a Lock Down Drill while they were in the kitchen but luckily it was only a drill and it was soon over. At 11:00 we all sat down in our classroom to enjoy our fantastic meal. 

Period 3:  Because we are having a Terry Fox Assembly in Period D we had to fill in the Daily Report this period. We also got have our dessert, Chocolate Chip Cookies (unfortunately Store bought ) and Vanilla Ice Cream. Mr. Wilkens had to leave at 1:00 for a dental so we had an early meditation sitting.

Period 4: We went to the Terry Fox Assembly to learn about Terry Fox and the fund raising effort here at Maplewood.

Daily Report For Wednesday September 17th 2014

Today’s Date: Wednesday September 17^th. 2014

The Weather Today was:                Mostly Sunny

High : 20    Low : 9   P.O.P.: 20%

In Class Today:

Period 1: In baking today we helped to make some raspberry muffins. Ibrahim , another  student  and Stafhan measured out the ingredients for the muffins. Jaran mashed some bananas to make muffins. Laven and Robert portioned out some Chocolate Chip Cookies.  

Period 2: We went to the Art Room to work on our Ceramic Vases. Mr. Wilkens did a demonstration on the Scratch, Wet and Attach technique. We put the bottom on our vase and then cleaned up. Here are some pictures of us working on our Vases.

Period 3: We all did our Current Event Activity. When we had finished our worksheets we went for a walk outside around the school property. While we were walking we got to enjoy a treat from the Bakeshop. Ms. Vorobej sent over some fresh muffins. The muffins were delicious !  

Period 4: We filled in the daily report. Then we had a special sitting. We meditated using a Guided Meditation by Sharon Salzberg.

Daily Report for Tuesday September 16th. 2014

Today’s Date: Tuesday September 16^th 2014

The Weather Today was:  Mostly Sunny  Somewhat Cool

In Class Today:

Period 1: We started out the class with a review of our hand outs on measurement. Robert, Aaron and Ibrahim measured out the ingredients for Chocolate Chip Cookies. Stafhan, Shaggy and Kabilan took some Oatmeal Raisin Cookies out of the freezer and put them out on trays. Jaran and another student portioned out some Chocolate Cookie dough to make cookies.

  

Period 2: We started out with a Circle Time discussion of what we did yesterday with Mr. Holt , our supply teacher. Then we did our Drama Activities. We began by playing Musical Chairs. Aaron won the first game, our mystery student won the second game and Stafhan won the last game. We then did our Circle Dance activity and everyone had a chance to show off their dance moves.

Period 3: We began with a Money Math activity. Mr. Wilkens and some of the students handed out some plastic coins and fake bills. Then we all identified the different coins and bills. We also were challenged to come up with various amounts of money using different types of coins and bills. When we had finished our Money Math we went for a walk around the school property.

Period 4: We filled in our Daily report. Then we had our daily meditation sitting. At the end of the day we had a little time for Free Time.

Today’s Date:  Monday September 15, 2014

The Weather Today was a mix of sun and clouds

Period 1: We had a supply teacher in baking. We did worksheets. We did a lesson on how to use a measuring cup.

Period 2:  We had a discussion about our weekend and we wrote in our journals. We picked 10 words from our journals for our spelling test on Friday.

Period 3: We did our daily hygiene and classroom jobs. We did a review lesson on telling time. We practiced telling time on the smart board and did a time worksheet.

Period 4:  We went for a walk around the school yard.  We had a fire drill and did our daily report. Then we had meditation.

Today’s Date: Friday September 12^th 2014  

The Weather Today was:  A mix of Sun and Clouds.

In Class Today:

Period 1: Ibrahim,  Shaggy,  Stafhan and Robert  peeled and mashed some ripe banana’s.  Aaron, Laven Jaran and Ralph measured out the ingredients for Banana Cranberry Muffins. Then we all helped to clean up.

Period 2: We began class with a IWB ( Interactive White Board ) activity. We looked a different educational programs and web sites that we might be able to use while we were in the Computer Lab. In the second half of the period we went to the Computer Lab for our scheduled weekly time.

Period 3: When we got back from lunch we started out with dental hygiene. Then we did our classroom jobs. Mr. Wilkens then gave us a lesson on telling time with an analog clock.   While we were doing the lesson   Mr. Infinity’s class came by selling goods from the bakeshop. Mr. Wilkens bought us all a Chocolate Chip Cookie ( except for Ibrahim who cannot eat sweets ! ) Then we all went for a walk around the school grounds.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               

Period 4: We did the usual things. Filled in, and posted  the daily report   and did our daily meditation sitting.

Daily Report for Thursday September 11th 2014

Today’s Date: Thursday September 11^th. 2014

The Weather Today was:  Overcast and somewhat cool.

High: 16    Low: 12    P.O.P.: 20%

In Class Today:

Period 1: In baking today we helped make product for the cafeteria. Jaran, Aaron and Ibby weighed out  the ingredients for pizza dough then put them in the mixer. After mixing we left the dough to proof. Ralph, Kabilan Stafhan and Devon were on Plum duty with Ms. Benyarko. They washed, peeled and cut up the plums. We still do not know what Ms. Vorobej is doing with all these plums but we will find out. At the end of the period we put some worksheets into our binders.

Period 2: Today was our first Lunch Program meal ! Since we are not yet allowed off school property, Mr. Wilkens had to do the shopping by himself. He brought in the groceries for a rather simple meal. We had Grilled Cheese Sandwich’s , Tomato Soup, (sadly, from a can ) and a scrumptious Green Salad. Devon made the Fruit Punch. Aaron and Laven cut up some garnish for the salad. Ralph prepped the lettuce by breaking it up, washing it and then spinning it dry. Ibrahim and Jaran set the table. Kabilan made the Tomato Soup. After a demonstration by Mr. Wilkens we all took turns making Grilled Cheese Sandwich’s.

Period 3: When we got back from the Cafeteria ( where we had gone after eating our lunch in class ) we had dessert. We had Fruit Salad and Ice Cream. Then Mr. Wilkens gave us a lesson on putting away the kitchen equipment and dishes. Next we learned how to load the dishwasher. When we had finished all this we had a short music lesson using the Drums !

Period 4: After a short walk outside we did the usual Period 4 things…. We filled in the daily report, did our classroom jobs and had just enough time for a skillful sitting.

Today’s Date: Wednesday September 10^th 2014

The Weather Today was:  Overcast and Warm

In Class Today:

Period 1: In baking today we made bread. Aaron and Ralph measured out the ingredients for the bread. Ibrahim and Laven washed some plums. Then they used a spoon to cut up the plums. Devon, Stafhan , Kabilan and Jaran greased the pans for the bread. At the end of the class we all helped to wash, dry and put away the pots and pans.

Period 2: We went to the Art Room where Mr. Wilkens taught us our first lesson on ceramics. We learned to put on our aprons, get a clay cloth, get a small container of water and a sponge as well as a stylus. Then Mr. Wilkens gave us some cardboard tubes to use as a mold. We then got some clay to start on our first project, a vase.

Period 3: When we got back from lunch we all brushed our teeth. Then we did the Current Events Activity. After we had filled in the worksheets we presented our current event article to the class. We then went for a walk around the school grounds.

Period 4: We filled in the Daily Report and posted it. Then we had our daily meditation sitting. We finished off the day by completing our classroom jobs.

Note to Parents: Tomorrow will be our first Lunch Program Lunch. Students will not need to bring a lunch.

In Class Today:

Period 1: We worked in different groups doing different assignments. Ralph and Aaron cleaned the trolleys. Then they put the food order away in the walk in fridge. Jaran, Stafhan, and Laven portioned out some Chocolate Chip and Oatmeal Cookies. Shaggy, Ibrahim, Kabilan, and Robert washed and peeled plums.

Period 2: We began the class with a circle time where Mr. Wilkens asked us about what we did yesterday in class, Then we had our Drama Activity. We began with a couple games of Musical Chairs. Stafhan and Aaron both won We also did a Circle Dance Activity. We finished off with an activity using our words and greeting each other.

Period 3: We began by doing a Calendar Activity with Ms. Benyarko. Then we all worked on some Numeracy Worksheets. When we had finished our worksheets we went for a walk outside. It was a beautiful day !

Period 4: We did our classroom jobs. Then we filled in and posted our Daily Report. We finished the day with a short sitting.

The Weather Today was: Sunny and warm. Temperature 27 c

In Class Today:    Supply teacher today: Mr. Osborne

Period 1:  We went to the Bakeshop.  We got our uniforms and talked about proper hygiene in the kitchen.

Period 2: We all talked about what we did on the weekend.   We also watched a movie and ate popcorn.

Period 3: We continued to watch the movie.  We ate lunch and did are classroom jobs.

Period 4: We completed our Daily report.

Daily Report for Friday September 5th 2014

Today’s Date: Friday September 5^th. 2014

The Weather Today was: Mostly Sunny and HOT !

High: 32              Low: 19      P.O.P.: 20% ( in the afternoon)

In Class Today:

Period 1: In Bakeshop today we began by going over shop safety and hygiene. We filled in a worksheet which taught us about these important things. Then we were shown how to portion out Chocolate Chip Cookies. We used red handled Ice Cream Scoops to portion out the cookie dough on to baking pans. We were divided into two groups and each group portioned out a total of the three pans. When we were done staff put the pans in the oven to bake. The cookies we made were sold today in the Cafeteria. Ms. Benyarko bought one and she said it was delicious !

Period 2: For the first time this year we went to the computer lab. It took some time for Mr. Wilkens to get us signed on as we all had to get new passwords. Once we were all signed on we went to Jigzone.com and worked on solving puzzles.

Period 3: We began by taking a class picture of us all wearing our Maplewood Wolverines T Shirts. Here is a picture of us in our shirts…

Today was Jaran’s  20^th. Birthday so we got to have Chocolate Cake and Ice Cream ! There were twenty candles on the cake and Jaran blew them all out. Because we have the Corn Roast in Period D we then did the Class Report. We also did our classroom jobs. That left us just enough time for a short sitting.

Period 4: We went to the Corn Roast. It was a lot of fun and delicious too !

Daily Report for Thursday September 4th 2014

Today’s Date: Thursday September 4th 2014

The Weather Today was: Mostly Sunny and Hot !

High: 29  Low: 18  P.O.P.: 10%

In Class Today: 

Period 1: In Bakeshop today we learned about following a recipe to make different types of baked goods. We also learned about how to use a measuring cup and spoons to measure out ingredients. We learned about how important it is to follow the recipe and measure accurately.  

Period 2: We started out with a lesson on how to read and get information from a newspaper. Aaron did a great job reading out loud an article on school uniforms in a Brampton High School. Then Mr. Wilkens gave a short lesson on our school’s dress code. We then used the Promethean Board for some interactive activities on math and telling time . Some of the students used an online addition game which involved a boat race. Kabilan did extremely well on this activity, handily winning his race.

Period 3: Once again we used the Promethean Board to learn about music and beats. We watched some music videos on You Tube and learned how to follow different beats. Then we went for a walk around the school grounds.

Period 4: When we got back from our walk we had a refreshing snack of cookies and drinks. Then we filled in the daily report. We then rounded out our day with a short sitting.
